Taking down the champs

Around the Nation
Illinois Wesleyan beat top-ranked Washington U., the two-time defending champ last week. But that alone doesn't win the national championship. For the Titans, the road can't get any easier, not when it leads back to a team that has beaten them twice in three games. But it's a big win for a program that had gone just 40-37 the past three seasons.

Evans Clinchy has more in this week's Around the Nation.

Of course, there's still one champion left in Division III basketball, and that's the George Fox women. The next team that gets a crack at them is Carthage, which may not have played the Bruins before, but at least their coach has seen them. Tim Bernero's take as his team prepares for Friday night's game, in Around the Nation.

• Men's bracket
• Women's bracket
• Bracket challenge!

Plus, Friday night games get started again, with Sweet 16 games in both brackets. NCAA.com will be producing video broadcasts at UW-Stevens Point and Williams for men, and Amherst and Illinois Wesleyan for women. We'll be at St. Mary's as well, while the other sectionals have video of their own. We'll have all the links here and be constantly updated through the evening as the roads to Salem and Bloomington get narrower.

Friday night's men's schedule and women's schedule.

UW-Stout's Julia Hirssig and Williams' Blake Schultz have been named the 2010 Jostens Trophy winners. The winner is chosen by a national selection committee that consists of college coaches, former athletes, college administrators and selected members of the media. The members of the national selection committee vote based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy will be presented in Salem, Va., on March 18.

Hirssig, a senior, started every game for UW-Stout and averaged 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds in just 27 minutes per game, while shooting 68.2 percent from the floor. A 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in 2009, Hirssig has a 3.96 GPA in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. She is also active in her church and volunteers in elementary schools and for the Salvation Army.
• Women's bracket

Schultz leads the No. 2-ranked Ephs in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game, and shoots 52 percent from three-point range. He has a 3.29 grade-point average in his economics/pre-med major and has coordinated Eph team relationships with the local A Better Chance (ABC) program and nearby Berkshire Farm Center (juvenile delinquents in a New York State residence facility), enabling the participants to visit practices and meet and correspond with players. Further, he coordinated free summer basketball camp opportunities for ABC students.

Herb Hilgeman, who recently completed his 34th year as Rhodes' men's basketball coach, announced he will retire from his position at Rhodes effective May 15. He retires with a career mark of 473-360.

Hilgeman arrived to Rhodes in 1976 taking over a struggling Lynx program. He quickly shaped Rhodes into a nationally recognized program posting a 16-9 record in his third year and a 22-6 record in his fourth year, earning the Lynx their first-ever invitation to the Division III NCAA Tournament. In Hilgeman's fifth year Rhodes returned to the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Elite 8 finishing the 1981-82 season with a 23-3 record.
Current Memphis University School assistant basketball coach Matt Bakke, the point guard on the those fabulous Lynx teams, had this to say about his coach. "It's been an honor and a privilege to be associated with Herb Hilgeman. He brought out

D3H: Kuhle out at UW-Platteville

UW-Platteville will begin a national search for a new women's basketball coach immediately, Pioneer athletic director Mark Molesworth announced.

The school will not offer a new contract to coach Tina Kuhle. She was the Pioneers' head coach for six seasons, compiling a 65-88 record, including a 31-65 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mark. Counting her six years at Clarke, Kuhle has a 149-147 career record. The Pioneers were 12-13 this past season, 5-11 WIAC, and have not had a winning record in conference or overall since going 14-12, 8-8 in 2003-04.

"This was a a very difficult decision, because Tina Kuhle is a quality person," Molesworth said, "but when we evaluated the entire program and looked at many different aspects, we decided it was time to move in another direction. We sincerely thank Tina for her eight years (two as an assistant) at UW-Platteville and wish her luck in her future endeavors."

Dominick Chierico was standing on the baseline at William Paterson with a camera and captured the defining moment of the first round. And with William Paterson being knocked out of the tournament, the Albertus Magnus win still has ramifications today.

In case you missed it, William Paterson, essentially the top seed in the bracket, took a 55-54 lead on the GNAC champs with 1.6 seconds left on a jumper by Gabriel Paul. Out of timeouts, Albertus Magnus inbounded to Byron Reaves, who shot over the defender from halfcourt for the victory. Check the clock for more.
Three of Saturday night's regional finals were so good, they needed extra time to finish them.

The best was in Maine where Babson outlasted Colby 76-73 in double overtime. The teams took turns holding -- and losing -- leads throughout the night. Babson led the entire first half, though only by two at the break. Julianne Kowalski drilled a three for Colby to give the White Mules their first lead early in the second half. Colby led for most of the second half until the Beavers took a one point lead with 17 seconds left. Kowalski hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime. Extra time followed the same pattern. Colby led for most of the first overtime, but couldn't finish the Beavers off. Babson led for all of the second overtime and, when Kowalski missed a three pointer

With the Titans leading by three and 17 seconds left, Jordan Zimmer missed a free throw but Doug Sexauer grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. His free throws iced the Titans' victory.

Utica rallied from a 15-point second half deficit and took its first lead 58-57 with 3:30 to play.
Over the next 17 days, 60 basketball games will determine which team hoists Walnut and Bronze in Salem, Va., as the 2010 Division III men's basketball national champion. And the tournament started with a significant upset, as Maine-Farmington, which entered the night at just 14-11, went to Bridgewater State and came away with the 64-63 victory. Bridgewater State, which made an impressive tournament run of its own last year, had two shots in the final 5.2 seconds to win and missed them both.
More than 1,000 miles from home, Wheaton (Ill.) went 10-for-20 from three-point range in beating Mary Hardin-Baylor 73-58. Andrew Jahns played all 40 minutes and scored 25 points, while Ben Panner did the same and poured in 21. And Chapman finished off the night by avenging its only Division III loss of the season, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 58-47 to win the free trip to Whitworth.
The award, which honors the top Division III basketball men's and women's student-athlete of the year, is based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic ability and community service.
This year on the women's side there was a three-way tie for 10th place. After considerable discussions, the committee felt the fairest method was to forward all 12 nominees to the national selection committee as finalists.

First, we'll bottom-line it for you. Anderson in, Calvin out. Wesley in, Colby out.

Oh, and the West Coast winner doesn't fly to the Midwest. Whether it's Whitworth, or first-round opponents Chapman and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps that get off the West Coast, they'll head to a sectional somewhere in the Eastern Time Zone.
So Anderson got in and Calvin didn't. Perhaps now Anderson coach Tom Slyder can get Calvin to schedule him, as he said on last night's Hoopsville show. And Wesley apparently passed Messiah in the final Mid-Atlantic regional rankings to get on the board, then in the field, while Colby, which was bidding to become the third NESCAC team in the field, did not.

The NCAA released its 2010 women's basketball bracket this afternoon, and with relatively little fanfare, it's a well-distributed set of teams which we've come to expect from the women's committee. In fact, the matchups of pods (Amherst-Moravian, Kean-William Paterson, Illinois Wesleyan-Hope) looks remarkably like our bracket projection.

Download the 2010 Division III women's basketball NCAA Tournament bracket.
The NCAA selected Williams over Capital. We took Capital in our projections based on Williams losing to Baldwin-Wallace, while Capital swept B-W. The selection of Williams means that yes, there are five NESCAC teams in the field, a limit we couldn't see crossing. Southern Maine's tournament streak also continues, rather than Gustavus Adolphus. In Pool B, the NCAA well, the NCAA opted for Minnesota-Morris instead of Chapman. There was no good answer there.
Will all four ODAC teams get in, when it's all said and done? Will we see multiple NJAC teams for the first time in years? Will more CCIW teams make the tournament or NESCAC teams?

Championship Saturday had a lot to offer, especially for those teams who secured automatic bids to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Four teams did so by beating ranked foes for the third time this season. No. 4 Hope defeated archrival No. 11 Calvin 68-49 to win the MIAA title. The Flying Dutch used a 15-0 run to take the lead at the half and never looked back.
D3H: Fisher falls, but others hold on

It's hard to tell nationally who's safe at any given moment during a busy Championship Saturday, but if you win, there's no question.

If you lose, such as John Carroll did Friday night, even as the No. 1 team in the regional rankings, there's no guarantees. And while William Paterson and St. Mary's (Md.) held on in their conference championship games, St. John Fisher did not. The Cardinals, the top team in the last NCAA East Region rankings, fell to cross-street rival Nazareth as Corey McAdam sunk two free throws with seven seconds left to lift his team over its rival 65-64 and into the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years.

Other teams will be forced to the bubble, as was MIT early Saturday with a loss to Clark in the NEWMAC semifinals. Saturday's men's scoreboard with box scores and game recaps. And who's in the tournament so

D3H: Seeking Cinderella

The first half of Division III's week to crown conference champions went according to form with all but one ranked team advancing But every season has a couple Cinderella teams who make a surprise run to the NCAA tournament.

Enter the Westminster (Pa.) women, who were below .500 when the week began but are now one win away from the Big Dance. The Titans upset No. 18 Washington and Jefferson 64-61 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals. Senior Amy Dolsak's layup with nine seconds left wrapped up the dramatic win. The Titans will need another upset tomorrow when they face No. 16 Thomas More on the Saints' home floor.

Also enter Massachusetts College, who is still below .500 even after tonight's win over top seeded Bridgewater State 61-53 in the MASCAC semifinals. The Trailblazers were 4-8 in the MASCAC regular season, but they will play Worcester State

D3H: John Carroll upset in OAC

John Carroll entered the weekend as the top seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference and the No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA's Great Lakes regional poll. But the Blue Streaks will have an uncomfortable 60 hours to wait to see if they will make the NCAA Tournament Field of 62 after they lost at home to OAC No. 5 seed Heidelberg 104-97. It's the sixth regional loss for John Carroll. Check out Friday's men's scores with box scores and game stories. For women's coverage, scroll down.
&&f-boxl&&Bubble team fans narrowly avoided another upset as Carthage, which trailed the first 15 minutes of the second half, then rallied for a seven-point lead which it almost gave away before beating Augustana 55-52 in the CCIW semifinals.
D3H: A good Knight for Carleton

What was a good night for Carleton will end up being a bad one for someone else. The Knights upset No. 3 St. Thomas 73-67 in the MIAC semifinals, putting the Tommies in position to take away one of the 19 at-large bids.

Jeremy Sutherland, normally Carleton's defensive force, lit up the Tommies for 20 points, 18 in the second half to lift Carleton to its first-ever MIAC tournament road victory. The Knights, who will travel to Gustavus Adolphus for the conference title game, shot 65 percent from the floor in the second half, including 6-for-9 from three-point range. Thursday's men's scores.

That means someone else who was on the bubble for making the NCAA tournament now needs to win their conference tournament or else. Check out our best guess at which teams are on that bubble.
St. Mary's (Md.) knows how precarious that position can be. The

D3H: Favored for a reason

Guess they call them favorites for a reason. Nationally ranked teams went 7-0 in conference tournament action on a night that saw very few upsets on the men's or women's side.

In men's action, the top seeds across the Mid-Atlantic region all advanced to conference championship games. Albright, which was supplanted by St. Mary's (Md.) in the most recent regional rankings, defeated Messiah 73-67 to advance to the MAC Commonwealth final where it will face Lycoming. More Wednesday's men's scores.

Cabrini handled Immaculata 89-68 and will meet Neumann in the CSAC final on Saturday. Darnell Braswell scored 23 points for DeSales who beat King's 82-69, setting up a MAC Freedom title game against Misericordia. Merchant Marine will play Scranton for the first automatic bid in the history of the Landmark Conference.

Jose Rebimbas won his 300th game at William Paterson as his Pioneers put the clamps on Ramapo in a 55-37 win.

D3H: The other Midwest team

Around the Nation
The Division III men's basketball talk in the state of Wisconsin centers around a handful of schools this year. UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater have been ranked from the get-go, while Carthage, as the regular-season winner of the CCIW, is on the radar as well. Two of those teams are NCAA Tournament locks, while the third is pretty close as well.

But even though St. Norbert has been ranked in 11 consecutive polls, and been as high as No. 9, the Green Knights remain significantly under the radar heading into this weekend's Midwest Conference tournament.

&&f-boxl&&Even so, that's a lot better than the eight-, seven- and nine-win seasons the Green Knights went through just a few years ago. Evans Clinchy has more in this week's Around the Nation.

Plus, Scranton faces a tough test this weekend -- a test they've failed twice already this season. Williams finds itself in a familiar spot,

Kennan Killeen saved someone's spot on the NCAA Tournament bubble, hitting a layup with 4.4 seconds left to lift No. 18 Washington and Jefferson, the second seed in the PAC tournament, past seventh-seeded Bethany 66-65. Tuesday's women's scoreboard.

Top seeded and 16th-ranked Thomas More cruised past Thiel 75-51 in the PAC tournament and will host the semifinals and finals. Sixth-seeded Chatham upset Grove City and will play at the hosts. In the NJAC, William Paterson has a chance to avenge its midseason 102-66 loss to Kean, as the Pioneers advanced with a 75-60 win against Rowan and Kean beat Montclair State 92-68. Melissa Beyruti, who already set the D-III career three-pointer mark, broke the all-divisions mark of Kansas State's Laurie Koehn, hitting six threes to get to 397 for her career.

Christopher Newport head men's coach C.J. Woollum collected the 500th victory of his 26-year career as his Captains (13-12) defeated Greensboro, 73-60, in the first round of the USA South Tournament Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

Woollum is the first Division III men's coach in Virginia to reach the 500-win milestone.

The Captains trailed only once, near the start of the second half, when Greensboro pushed in front by two, 36-34. But CNU ran off the next 16 straight points to grab a 50-36 margin with 11:56 to play and never led by less than double-digits again.

Christopher Newport was paced by Conley Taylor with 21 points, hitting 8-10 from the floor. Theo Baker added 12 and Brian Hermann 10. Mark Blaingame, who recently went over the 1,000 rebound mark for his career, grabbed 15 boards.

After 13 seasons at the helm of the Carleton women's basketball program, Tammy Metcalf-Filzen announced she is retiring from her position as coach and associate professor effective June 30, the end of the current academic year.

The winningest coach in program history, she is stepping aside to devote more time and energy to her family. This past Saturday, she concluded her 15th season as a head coach and 13th at Carleton. Metcalf-Filzen owns a 252-148 career coaching mark, including a 226-122 mark at Carleton.

The Knights were 5-20 this season, their second consecutive year below .500.

The Knights won three consecutive regular-season Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles under Metcalf-Filzen's guidance from 2002-05, including the school's first outright crown in 2004-05. Carleton won five MIAC tournaments, including four consecutive from 2001-04 and another in 2007-08, resulting in the program's five NCAA Tournament appearances.
