D3hoops.com: Ex-Dartmouth coach hired at Daniel Webster

Daniel Webster moved quickly to replace departed coach Jeremy Currier, naming former Dartmouth head coach Dave Faucher to lead the program.

Faucher was most recently head coach at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H., for three seasons, going 42-32. He was head coach at Dartmouth for 13 of his 20 years there, going 136-208 from 1991 to 2004.

Phil Rowe, formerly the men's coach at Keene State and currently the athletic director at Daniel Webster, was coach at New Hampshire for part of the same time frame.

Currier, who has been with the program for two seasons, has been named the associate head coach at Division II member Pfeiffer in Misenheimer, N.C. He was 13-37 in two seasons with the Eagles.

Daniel Webster went 7-44 in the two seasons prior to Currier's hiring. The Eagles went 7-19, 5-13 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference last season, and return rookie of the year winner Chris Hanson.

D3hoops.com: Summer vacation

The summer is almost over and pick-up games are heating up in Division III gyms across the USA as students return to campus for the 2008-09 school year. Over the summer we detailed many teams' trips to play games and tour overseas but one team that just returned home this week came back with an interesting story to tell.

Ursinus ended up learning a lot and playing a lot in Brazil, but got a last-minute surprise when an NBA star came in to face them.

As Keith Page put it, "We showed up in Sau Paulo ready to play some unknown Brazilian hotshots and out of nowhere Leandro Barbosa walks in, gets a jersey, then walks out the locker room and into the lay-up line!"

Not only did Barbosa average 15.6 points per game for the Phoenix Suns this past season, but he's Remy Cousart's favorite player.

It was also a good trip for the Bears, who reached the Final Four this past season, to get accustomed to life post-Nick Shattuck. In this case, John Noonan scored 40 points against Barbosa's team in a game Ursinus lost by two.

More on the entire trip from Page's Ursinus blog.

Mike Dutton, who turned a perennial loser into a consistent winner at Vassar, stepped down to become athletic director and head boys' basketball coach at North Yarmouth Academy in Maine. The Brewers won 18 games each of the past two seasons and were invited to the ECAC tournament both times, including winning the postseason event in 2007.

The coach was at the helm for five of the seven winning seasons in Vassar men's basketball history in compiling a 170-187 career record in 14 years. The Brewers have a current streak of four consecutive seasons finishing .500 or better, the first such span in program history.

Del Harris, who was an assistant men's basketball coach at Division I Morgan State two seasons ago, was named interim head coach at Vassar.

Bridgewater men's basketball coach Bill Leatherman announced his retirement Wednesday after 23 years at the helm of the program.

Leatherman, who compiled a career record of 335-262, led the Eagles to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season title with a 17-9 record in his second season. A year later, Bridgewater won the 1987-88 ODAC championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Division III tournament – the school's first appearance in postseason play. That team finished with a 24-5 record, the best record during the Leatherman years.

His teams made two more trips to the NCAA tournament. The 1995-96 team earned an at-large bid and finished with an 18-10 record. The next season, the Eagles finished with a 21-8 record and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

In acknowledging Leatherman's record of success, Bridgewater president Phillip Stone said: "Coach Leatherman's greatest coaching achievement however is in the

Maryville (Mo.) has received permission from the NCAA to reclassify from Division III to Division II, effective Sept. 1, 2008.

The timeline to reclassify to NCAA Division II is a three-year process. After successful completion of the two-year exploratory period, Maryville must be invited to enter the provisional year and Maryville's readiness to become an active member will continue to be evaluated. At the conclusion of three-year process, Maryville would be invited to active Division II membership.

The NCAA has tried to encourage schools to reclassify from Division III to Division II in order to ease the crowding in Division III. In recent years, Chestnut Hill, Lake Erie and Lincoln have done so.

"This is an exciting move for our institution," said Nina Caldwell, vice president for student life and dean of students. "NCAA Division II places a strong emphasis on academics and developing the whole person which mirrors our philosophy at Maryville.

In announcing the appointment Tuesday, Bates athletic director Kevin McHugh praised Furbush's "passionate commitment to the college and to the basketball program," adding that "Jon separated himself from an extremely strong candidate pool as the best fit to be the next men's basketball coach at Bates."

The board of trustees of Villa Julie College has voted unanimously to change the name of the institution to Stevenson University.

The decision follows the approval of the Maryland Higher Education Commission last month for university status for Villa Julie. One of the main components will be the Villa Julie College of Arts and Sciences, which will occupy the institution's original campus on Greenspring Valley Road in Stevenson, Md.

"After careful study and discussion over the past three years, the board felt the time was right for a name which better reflects the makeup of the institution," says Kevin Byrnes, chair of the board of trustees. "We understand the importance and history of the Villa Julie name and are pleased it will remain as a major part of Stevenson University."

Historically, the name connects the institution's campuses in Stevenson and Owings Mills. Henry Stevenson, a prominent Baltimore grain merchant who founded Stevenson, later
