Bison earn split with Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) drove in two runs and freshman Alexis Ferris (Holyoke, Mass.) picked up her 11th win of the season as the Nichols College softball team split its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Western New England Thursday afternoon at Golden Bear Softball Park.
 
Game One: Nichols 5, Western New England 2
Drake drove in two runs with a single to center in the second inning and both junior Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Kuelling (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and recorded an RBI for the Bison.
 
Kuelling plated Meehan with a single in the first before Drake's hit pushed the lead to 3-0 the following inning. In the fourth, junior Kasey Ayer (Niantic, Conn.) scored on an error, making it 4-0, and then Meehan drove in sophomore Callie Andrews (Southbridge, Mass.) with the fifth run of the game.
 
In the circle, Ferris fanned five over seven innings. She surrendered three hits and two runs while walking three.
 
Senior Katie Wood (Westport, Mass.) drove in both run for the Golden Bears with a single in the fourth.
 
Game Two: Western New England 10, Nichols 0 (5 inn.)
Junior Jenn Luba (Plymouth, Conn.) and freshman Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) each belted two-run home runs to spark the Golden Bears to victory. Luba finished with four RBI while Kistner drove in three.
 
Senior Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) was tagged for seven runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work in defeat for Nichols, which managed two hits.
 
All-Time Series
Today's games marked the 44th and 45th all-time meetings between Nichols College and Western New England. The Golden Bears have won nine of the last 10 meetings and lead the series, 31-13-1.
