Spartans toppled in weekend non-league matches

Senior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) rattled off five shots attempts with three coming on goal against Indiana Tech, while freshman net minder Maddie Poe (Kokomo, Ind.) came off the bench and forged a combined seven saves versus the Warriors and Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Wilmington College to highlight weekend Manchester University action Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10.

Hersick's attempts to break up a scoreless lock on the home side of the scoreboard at Good Field were dashed by ITC goalkeeper Christina Wynn who kept a 90-minute clean sheet with four saves. Meanwhile, on the other end of the pitch, Poe and junior teammate Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) put together seven saves of the eight for the Spartans. However, Indiana Tech improved to 4-2 by breaking up a scoreless knot less than 10 minutes in as part of a 5-0 victory.

The weekend began for assistant coach Katie Beal's squad with an 8-0 loss at the hands of the perennial power Quakers in the team's first road test. Freshman defender Sydnee Jensen (Casper, Wy.), senior midfielder Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.) and junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) each fired off a shot on goal at the home team net.

Manchester University resumes back-to-back home contests Wednesday, Sept. 13, hosting Huntington University. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
