Concordia's Jensen, UST's Dunne claim MIAC Outdoor multi-event titles

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Due to the winter weather in Northfield, Minn., the 2013 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Multi-event Championships were moved to Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. The men's decathlon and women's pentathlon took place Thursday and Friday to officially open the conference championships.

The women's pentathlon title was claimed by Concordia senior Kaari Jensen, who finished first in three of the seven events and racked up an impressive point total of 4,754. St. Olaf's Dani Larson had the best showing in three of the seven events as well and finished second with a total score of 4,524. Carleton's Amelia Campbell scored 4,414 total points and finished third by coming in second, third or fourth in each event.

Jensen had the top time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.11) and the top distances in the long jump (17-2.5) and the javelin (116-4), and she cemented her title by finishing second in the shot put and 200-meter dash, third in the high jump and fifth in the 800-meter run. Larson had the top time in the 200 (25.85) and the top height in the high jump (5-4.5) and Concordia's Anna Skow-Anderson recorded the best throw in the shot put (34-4.75).

St. Thomas junior Max Dunne ran, jumped and threw his way to the 2013 MIAC Outdoor Men's Decathlon championship, edging two teammates who also joined him in the top three. Dunne, who won with 6,322 total points, recorded the best mark in two different events, was in the top three in five and at least sixth in eight of the 10. Teammate Devin Dirth scored 6,142 to finished second while recording the top mark in three different events. Fellow Tommie Gavin Yseth was third with 6,097 total points and one top mark in an event.

Dunne had the top distance in the long jump (21-9.5) and the top height in the pole vault (14-1.25) en route to his decathlon championship. Dirth was first in the shot put (44-11), discus (126-11) and pole vault (14-1.25), and Yseth had the top time in the 110-meter hurdles (16.02). Carleton's Colby Seyferth had the best time in the 100-meter dash (11.15) and 400-meter dash (50.07), Patrick Ecklund from St. Thomas cleared the high-jump at a meet-best 6-2, Saint John's Alex Ukkelberg had the top throw in the javelin (159-11) and UST's Dan Kremer had the top time in the 1,500-meter run (4:18.96).

The 2013 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships featured the multi-events this week, followed by the full event the following weekend. The University of St. Thomas will host the conference meet on its St. Paul, Minn., campus May 10-11. The MIAC has a home page that includes full details regarding the event.
